Chapter 1 of 10
The Ceremony
Alpha Declan Ashford kissed my sister at the autumn claiming ceremony in front of the whole Ashford Pack.
He did it to sever the bond. I felt the thread snap in my chest like a guitar string cut with shears. I dropped to my knees in the third row. My mother dragged me out by the elbow.
Sera got the white dress. Sera got the cabin by the lake. Sera got the Alpha.
I got nothing.
Three years later, I am back in Ashford territory for one reason. My sister is pregnant. The pup is not Declan's. It belongs to the enforcer Declan exiled two winters ago, the one Sera met at a motel in the next county.
I have the DNA report in my coat pocket. I am here to deliver it.
The pack house is decorated for the winter solstice. Declan meets me at the front door in a green wool sweater. He looks older. He looks tired.
"Lena." My name in his mouth sounds like a question he has been carrying for three years.
"Declan." I keep my voice cool. "Sera sent me. She has something to tell you."
"She's upstairs. She has not come down in a week." He looks at me properly. "Why are you really here?"
The bond that broke three years ago is pulling in my chest. It never went away. It has been lying low, waiting. I can feel him feeling it too. His hand comes up to his own sternum like something just hit him.
I should not have come. The Moon Goddess is laughing at me from somewhere.
"Sera's pup is not yours," I say, because I am a fool who always tells him the truth. "And our bond is still here. It never left."
Declan's hand stayed pressed to his sternum like he was checking for a wound. His jaw worked. The green sweater stretched across his shoulders as he took a half-step back, not retreat, not advance. Caught.
"You don't know what you're talking about," he said. Flat. Controlled. The voice he used before pack judgments.
"I have a DNA report that says otherwise." I kept my hand in my coat pocket, fingers resting on the folded paper. "Kael Blackthorn. The enforcer you exiled. Sera met him at a motel in Ridge County. She has been seeing him for eight months."
Declan's jaw tightened. I watched the muscle jump in his cheek. The green sweater made him look almost soft, almost approachable. Almost. His eyes were the problem. Gunmetal gray, same as at the ceremony, right before he walked past me and kissed my sister.
"The bond broke," he said. "I felt it break."
"You felt what you wanted to feel." I tilted my head. Left-handed habit. "The Moon Goddess does not operate on pack politics, Declan. She gave you what you asked for. You just did not get the right answer."
A sound from above us. Footsteps on the upstairs landing.
Sera stood at the top of the stairs in a white robe, one hand on her stomach. She was crying. Her face was bloated and raw.
"Lena," she said. My name came out broken. "I told you not to come. I told you I would do it myself."
She looked at Declan. She did not look away when he stared back at her.
"The pup is Kael's," she said. "I was going to tell you at the solstice gathering. I was going to tell everyone." Her voice shook. "I do not know how to be the Luna of this pack. I never was. I was just the girl who was there when you needed someone to choose."
Declan did not move. The Christmas garland above the door rustled in the wind. Someone inside the pack house laughed, oblivious to what was happening at the front entrance.
"You are going to tell me everything," he said. His hand was still pressed to his sternum, fingers splayed like he was holding something in place.
I pulled the DNA report from my pocket. I held it out to him. My left hand. The paper trembled slightly despite my best efforts.
"Start here," I said. "Kael Blackthorn is the father. I confirmed it three days ago through a lab in the city. Sera gave me her hair sample when she called me. She has been too afraid to tell you herself for two months."
Sera came down the stairs. One step. Two. She stopped when she reached the bottom. Her eyes were red-rimmed and swollen. She smelled like lavender and fear-sweat and something else, something new, something growing.
"He is coming back," she said. "Kael. He sent me a message this morning. He knows about the pup. He said he is coming to claim it."
Declan's head snapped toward her. The Alpha in him surfaced, cold and sharp, slicing through the tired man in the green sweater.
"Claim it," he repeated. "He is exiled. He does not have rights to anything in this territory."
"He says the pup changes things." Sera clutched her stomach harder. "He says if you will not give him a place in the pack, he will take what you will not protect."
The bond in my chest pulsed. I felt it sync between Declan and me, that old thread vibrating like a struck bell. He felt it too. I watched his eyes change, watched the gray deepen toward storm-cloud, watched him realize that the bond he tried to sever had been doing exactly what bonds do. Waiting.
I should have left. I should have handed over the report and walked back to my car and driven the four hours back to my apartment and my empty life. That was the plan. That was always the plan.
But Sera was standing there with one hand on her stomach and terror in her eyes, and Declan was looking at me like I was a problem he had never solved and could not solve now, and the Moon Goddess was definitely laughing because she had handed me a mess that had nothing to do with me and everything to do with me at the same time.
I stayed.
The door opened.
Not knocked. Not pushed. Opened, like whoever was on the other side had been standing there long enough to know exactly when to make his entrance.
Kael Blackthorn.
He was taller than I remembered. The exile had been good to him — or bad for him, depending on how you measured. He had always been lean and sharp-featured, the kind of enforcer who looked like he could disappear into a crowd. Now he looked like someone who had stopped trying to disappear. His coat was dark wool, unlapped, showing a white shirt underneath. His eyes were the color of burnt amber and they found me immediately, then moved to Declan, then settled on Sera.
"Evening, Alpha," Kael said. His voice was mild. Almost polite. "I heard there was a solstice party. I hope you don't mind that I brought my own gift."
He stepped inside. The door swung shut behind him.
Sera stood up from her chair. Her hand went to her stomach. Her face went white.
Declan turned to face him. The bond in my chest surged, pulled, snapped taut between us like a line about to break.
And Kael Blackthorn, the exiled enforcer, the man who had gotten my sister's pup in his belly, looked at me. Looked at Declan. Looked at the space between us where the bond was pulling us together like two magnets finally allowed to attract.
"Well," he said softly. "This is going to be complicated."
The Moon Goddess, I was certain, was laughing.
