Chapter 4 of 5

The Reckoning

The Queenboro Diner smelled of burnt coffee and bacon grease, and Serena Marchetti sat in a cracked vinyl booth at the back, watching the door with the same stillness she had learned in five years of Whitmore dinner parties. Her hands were folded around a white ceramic mug that had gone cold twenty minutes ago. Outside, the October rain fell in thin gray lines against the window, smearing the neon sign into ribbons of red and blue.

The man who walked through the door looked nothing like the photographs she remembered from her father's law firm Christmas parties. He was thinner, grayer, with a salt-and-pepper beard that had been trimmed too close to the jaw and a rain-spotted overcoat that hung off his shoulders like borrowed clothing. He ordered coffee at the counter with a voice she would have recognized anywhere, a low rumble that used to fill her parents' living room during strategy sessions. Then he turned, and his eyes found hers.
