The house is not asleep. It is holding its breath.
I know because I set the stage myself. At eleven, the guards on the east perimeter walked away from their posts. At midnight, the kitchen lights died and the service gate swung open on a silent hinge. I watched both things from my bedroom window while my wedding dress hung heavy on my shoulders and the black clutch sat open on the vanity.
